In Depth Study Group – D H Lawrence
The Nottinghamshire Network of U3As has agreed to establish an in depth study group. This would be open to U3A members, from any U3A in Nottinghamshire, who would be interested in doing some independent and collective study on aspects of the life and work of D H Lawrence. There are many resources available within the County and topics could include the social, economic and industrial background to his life, and the various places he lived as well as his novels, poems and paintings. There could also be opportunities to attend lectures and make visits to relevant venues. If you think you may be interested in being part of such a group please contact me as soon as possible. I hope to have an initial meeting before the end of September.

Chesterfield Canal Walk 11th May 2012
11th May 2012 saw the Chesterfield Canal walked by 185 U3A members from Ashfield, Arnold, Burton Joyce, Chesterfield, Dukeries, Mansfield, Retford and Worksop.
Each U3A had a section of the canal towpath to navigate, each was responsible for its own members transport, safety.
The weather was kind to us on the day, even though certain areas did prove to be a little on the muddy side!!
As each U3A completed their section they then proceeded to St Anne's Church Hall in Worksop where a Hog Roast awaited them followed by tea/coffee and biscuits. A total of 167 were fed and watered.
After the meal, there was a surprise performance by Worksop's own Steel Band of Breakfast television fame "Steelpantastic" to the delight of the members.
A great day was enjoyed by all, and one e-mail said "What a great way to start the Jubilee celebrations.
I hope you find this report encouraging that so many members actually had taken part. We think it was fantastic and worth all the effort.
Best wishes to you all

Subject: Freedom in Dance – Leading Dance for Older People
Dear Friend,
I write to you to let you know about an exciting learning opportunity for service users in your district who have a keen interest in dance and wish to begin or continue working to benefit the lives of the older generation. I would be grateful if you could assist us with spreading the word so that the opportunity can be worthwhile to many practitionersand service users as possible.
With funding from Nottinghamshire County Council, Lincolnshire Dance will be leading a module of the OCN accredited course ‘Freedom in Dance – Leading Dance for Older People’.
‘Experiencing Dance for Facilitators’ gives practical and theoretical ideas about working with older people in safe and appropriate ways. Over 2 days, participants can experience the course which ultimately allows them to develop skills towards using dance and movement as effective tools and play a vital role in the wellbeing of older adults.
Essentially, the completion of the module can develop the career prospects of the participant. In this ever changing time, where accreditation for the work we do is becoming very important, this module will give a starting point for any artist who wants to work in an environment which will benefit the health and wellbeing of older people. Participants can either just enjoy the course or they can submit work for accreditation. Those who pass the module can then go on to complete the full qualification for a reduced price at a later date.
The 2 day course takes place at Mansfield Old Library from 10am to 4pm on Friday 25th & Saturday 26th May 2012. It will cost just £85 to participate and any interested parties should contact Lincolnshire Dance without delay in order to secure a place on the course. ou can call on 01522 811811 or email [email protected].
I would be very grateful if you could pass this email through your networks or to people or groups who you feel would be interested in this opportunity. Should you have any queries or if you would like an informal chat about this, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Many thanks in advance,
Lisa Hurst
